dc.description.abstractĊentru Ħidma Soċjali was the first agency to receive referrals of child abuse, but since the opening of the Child Protection Services Unit in Blata l-Bajda in 1994, reports of sexual abuse on children have been steadily increasing. This is due to awareness brought about by advertising through the media and other means. When people become aware of the issue of child sexual abuse, reports increase dramatically. (Macfarlane and Waterman.1986 p.5). A child sexual abuse prevalence study has never been made in Malta. The need for such a research study is now being felt more than ever. In my study, I attempt to draw out a picture of issues pertaining to child sexual abuse in Malta and how they relate to international findings. My aim is to show the predicament that the child finds her/himself in, and to present an argument in favour of increasing the existing services to survivors and their families, as well as to introduce therapy for the perpetrator. The study involves the experiences of social workers and their view on the local situation regarding children's rights, services available, and the situation at the law courts. The study also looks into the needs of the social workers involved in child sexual abuse and the necessity for these workers to be specifically trained. It concludes by making recommendations for improvements on an individual and national level.en_GB
