The origin and spread of our species, Homo sapiens , has been and will continue to be a central theme in human evolutionary studies (e.g., Stringer 2016). As a research topic, it combines the two great aspects of the evolutionary process, temporal change and spatial variation. Across the world, researchers are exploring the evolution of our species, from excavations in the remotest deserts to laboratory analyses that would have been impossible just a few years ago. Against this exciting backdrop, Hoffecker’s book is useful in some regards as a synthesis, yet it also offers a somewhat stale view of the evolution and dispersal of our species.en_GB
