This essay explores the issue of choice and breastfeeding. The study analyses the reasons why some mothers choose to breastfeed, whilst others choose not to, and what may help or hinder mothers in breastfeeding. The importance and benefits of breastfeeding, and any necessary steps to be taken to support successful breastfeeding are also discussed. In order to obtain first hand experiences and enrich the study, qualitative research was implemented throughout the study, which was then scrutinised and analysed. Seven participants took part in the interviews - three mothers who breastfed, three other mothers who did not breastfeed and a key informant on the subject. This study acknowledged the importance of breastfeeding, and the short and long term benefits breast milk bestows both to mother and baby. However, it was also found in the study that previous negative experiences of breastfeeding or else certain perceptions mothers might have on breastfeeding may make them opt out to breastfeeding. The study found that 'support', good advice, and mother's determination to breastfeed are necessary elements to successful breastfeeding. Therefore, further research to adopt schemes such as focus groups for nursing mothers to enhance 'support' on different levels, was recommended in order to give positive results, and revive a breastfeeding culture for the benefit of the whole society.en_GB
