Abstract: The Public Library is a social agency with a fundamental role in facilitating access to the printed world and the opportunity for the development and consolidation of literacy skills. However, the acquisition of these skills and the interaction between the book and the reader are subject to culturai social and educational barriers. Today, we are even more aware that reading is a crucial tool in the development of one's full potential. As a result, reading is at the core of the educational process and ongoing national campaigns are organised in educational and social settings, locally and abroad, to promote the pleasure of reading among children. "Storytelling" is a current educational programme organised weekly at the Central Public Library in Floriana, targeted for children aged four to seven. This programme aims at helping children in building up self-confidence whilst being introduced to the world of reading in a natural way. The participation of parents and guardians is encouraged and reinforced through "Il-Pjacir Taghna Nitkellmu Maghkom", aimed at parents and guardians whose children attend the above said programme. Originally, another programme "Kemm Inhobb Naqra" aimed at children aged eight to ten was also set up, but was interrupted along the years. My aim is to study the running of this programme through non-participant observations. These will be complemented by questionnaires submitted to organisers and parents and also by interviews conducted with children attending the Storytelling Programme, organised at the Central Public Library in Floriana. I also intend to analyse whether the goals for which this programme has been set are being met and the reasons for which the second programme was interrupted. Finally, I will proceed to propose any possible recommendations that might make the said programme more effective.
