Abstract: The aim of this study is to further awareness and understanding within the social work profession of what a gay life could entail, and possible consequences of non-acceptance of their sexuality. A literature review looks at homosexuality, its roots and various therapies to 'cure' or affirm it, how society oppresses and discriminates lesbians and gay men, and finally what makes them decide to enter into heterosexual marriages with the resulting consequences. The effects of a homophobic society on lesbians and gay men, with particular reference to those who marry, has been studied through two case studies of married gay men, one who is separated and another who is still married. Through the case studies it could be seen that heterosexual marriage for these two gay men had negative consequences. Though gay men may be 'comfortable' within a heterosexual marriage, they do not seem to be satisfied and fulfilled. The resulting discussion shows that there is a need to educate social workers and the public at large about the effects of homophobia and heterosexism, which may lead to marriage and the gay person being dissatisfied with his/her sexuality.
