Abstract: | A good school library can enable students to become independent users of information, to widen their knowledge and introduce them to new experiences. Still, secondary school libraries are nowadays facing very complex challenges. Surrounded by a multitude of different formats, problems of budget cuts and lack of qualified staff, the collections of such libraries can easily become outdated or develop without any particular direction. This long essay aims at highlighting the contribution which a Collection Development Policy (CDP) can have in the adequate and professional management of collections in secondary school libraries. This is done through a comprehensive research on the main functions and aims of such documents, as well as through a discussion on the benefits which can result through the use of these policies, especially within the local context. A step-by-step guide to the process required for the setting up of a proper CDP, as well as an analysis of the different sections found within such a statement is presented. A sample of a CDP which can be used within a Maltese secondary school library is also put forward. |
