A medical and pharmaceutical bibliography for Malta : an annotated classified check-list of texts illustrating the history of medicine and pharmacy in Malta

Abstract

This bibliography of 426 texts illustrating the history of medicine and pharmacy in Malta has been gleaned from many sources. It consists of: references found in journals, monographs and chapters in monographs. Most texts are available either at the National Library of Malta or at the Melitensia section of the University of Malta Library. A selection had to be made from the 800 or so references traced so far from various libraries and bibliographies. The selection criteria were such as to leave out all references prior to 1900, and those published in numerous local newspapers. These criteria limit, to a certain extent, the usefulness of this bibliography for two reasons. First because during the nineteenth century there were several publications giving personal accounts of the disease outbreaks prevalent at that time. Secondly during the past decade or so there has been a wealth of historical material published in local newspapers. However, it must be noted that all works published in local, and a few foreign, medical or historical journals have been included. The subject classification scheme is entirely my own. Within each subject heading works are arranged in chronological order of publication. An author index is found at the end of the bibliography.
