Abstract: It is a commonplace that the book of Jeremiah is virtually 'unreadable' and that it is extremely difficult to find a common thread linking its various parts which clearly stem from various quarters and from different periods. B. succeeds in making theological sense of the book of Jeremiah especially by extracting from it a common theme which runs through its canonical form, namely that provided by the pattern of displacement and restoration centred on the disaster which hit Jerusalem in 587 BCE as well as on the prospect of the return from the exile in Babylon.
