Mothers of sexually abused children : identifying needs and providing support

Abstract

Available literature and professionals working in the field of child abuse have singled out mothers of sexually abused children and attributed various theories to their adequate or inadequate parenting role. Little or no concern has been given to mothers' feelings during such a difficult and traumatic experience. The purpose of this study is to identify the needs of these mothers by reviewing literature and by interviewing mothers themselves and the professionals who come in contact with them. Recommendations by both the mothers and the professionals are discussed. Finally the possibility of setting up support services are suggested.
