dc.description.abstractPurpose: The objective of this study is to outline the implications of networking by Maltese co-operatives. This includes assessing and determining the extent to which networking is being carried out, the role of co-operative institutions in promoting networking and eliminating barriers of networking, an evaluation of the financial and social implications of networking and recommendation on how networking among Maltese co-operatives may be improved. Design: This objective was achieved by asking all cooperatives to fill a questionnaire, out of which 38 valid responses were received. A series of twenty-two semi-structured interviews were then held, sixteen of which were carried out with co-operative representatives and six with co-operative experts. Findings: From the results of the study it transpires that the real notion of networking, such as formation of supply chain networks or technological units, is inexistent. The competitive and individualistic paradigm is highly prevalent. Moreover, this languish was a result of the recent split within the co-operative movement whereby different cooperatives were segregated under two different secondary co-operative institutions. Conclusion: The study concludes that the extent of networking in Malta is still lacking. Moreover there is an urgent need for the appointment of competent people who will be assigned with the task of promoting networking. This seems to indicate that a web which links together co-operatives should be formed. This can only be achieved through the formation of a central financial hub so as to assist co-operatives with their financial needs. Moreover networking can pave the way for the formation of more social co-operatives. Value: This study hopes to provide insight on how a network paradigm can provide cooperatives with a diverse way of co-operation so as to instigate growth into the cooperative movement. Recommendations include promoting education to improve the Maltese co-operative movement, restructuring the secondary co-operatives so as each and every co-operative industry will be represented, forming a financial institution which will be networked with a managerial and consultancy entity and promoting social cooperatives.en_GB
