Abstract: A national school food and nutrition policy is being drawn up. Suzanne Piscopo looks at how a healthier choice of foods can be provided in schools. A well-planned curriculum with excellent learning activities and relevant home work assignments will be ineffective if students lack access to a variety of healthful and appealing foods. Nutrition education is only the beginning of teaching nutrition to children and adolescents. A healthy school nutrition environment goes far beyond mere classroom instruction. [excerpt]
