This research project is aimed at investigating the degree to which informal education takes place in extra-curricular activities which provide recreational activities and education in the Maltese Educational system. The project takes a closer look at extra-curricular activities in one school and inquires whether specific characteristics of informal education happen in these activities and whether other typologies of education are taking place instead. The investigation is carried out via questionnaires and interviews on a sample of 100 students and 8 interviewees respectively. Stumbling blocks for the proper functioning of extra-curricular activities are looked into and suggestions for improvements pointed out. The role of the Youth Worker in the educational field and extra-curricular activities is also delved into. It is being suggested that extra-curricular activities become a better medium for informal education and the responsibility of informal educators or youth workers who are prepared and trained in this field.en_GB
