dc.description.abstract | Travel is an essential part of daily life and one that is valued highly. People need to travel in order to reach places of work or education, to purchase goods and services and to take part in a wide variety of social and leisure activities outside their homes. The use of a car is generally taken for granted. Few affairs have been more passionate in the 20t11 century than that between man and his car. The car has allowed millions to travel in comfort and security, at any time of the day. It has revolutionised people's lives. Continuing growth in road transport and consequent environmental impacts present a major challenge to the objective of sustainable development. Road transport accounts for about a quarter of the man-made gases that may be contributing to global warming. Actually, the role cars play is not the pressing question. More important, and more certain, is the enormous local damage caused by traffic congestion, that is pollution, noise, ugliness and wasted time. | en_GB |
