A review of safety and health standards in the location of petrol stations

Abstract

The aim of the study is to review the safety and health standards essential in the location of petrol stations. The study will concentrate on the health and safety hazards caused by fuels that could be encountered by the employees working in petrol stations, the people in the neighbourhood and also the potential harm that could be caused to the immediate environment, often including both urban and agricultural areas. Laws and regulations reflecting the standards that should be implemented in the location of petrol stations will be discussed. The purpose of the study is to promote appropriate material for consideration and guidance for those who propose to establish petrol stations or residential sites in the vicinity. Interviews questionnaires will be carried out to employees working at: 1. Malta Environment and Planning Authority; Those who are involved in pollution control regarding fuels (Volatile Organic Compounds). This is to identify which laws and regulations are followed in relation to a site that is being considered for building a petrol filling station. 2. EneMalta Corporation Employees (Petroleum Division) and the Malta Resource Authority who are responsible for the health and safety regarding fuels distributions. This is done to determine the Health and Safety Hazards related to fuels in petrol filling stations. 3. Petrol Stations employees will be interviewed to discuss possible health and safety hazards in relation to fuels and chemicals that they might have encountered. 4. Analyses and discussion of such hazards will be carried out and recommendations given.
