Abstract: This research assessed the level of compliance of State Primary Schools in Malta with the Minimum Health and Safety regulations with Display Screen Equipment Regulations 2002. The physical working environment and the level of occupational health and safety therein of clerical staff were analysed. The study relied in its majority on literature investigation and empirical information obtained through questionnaires and an in-depth interview. The findings of this study suggest that there is a discrepancy between what the employer is saying and what the employee actually experiences. Although, the study reveals that the majority of the workstations in State Primary Schools have adequate ergonomic features, workers' consultation and participation and medical eye examination of VDU users are still lacking. There is room for improvement in other areas such as risk assessments and the training of employees on health and safety issues. The last chapter of this long essay draws out conclusions and suggests recommendations to the Education Division to address the shortcomings and come in line with the "Minimum Health and Safety Requirements for Work with Display Screen Equipment Regulations, 2002."
