Abstract: It is all too common, nowadays, to make recourse to both prescribed and unprescribed pharmaceuticals whenever one is assailed by ailments. Drugs are a characteristic of modern life and too often equated with health, yet they are a paradox of modern man. The tendency of medical practitioners to prescribe drugs, the ever intensified efforts of scientists to develop increasingly potent drugs to curb formidable life-reducing diseases as cancer, heart disease, and AIDS, together with the widespread availability of these chemical preparations more than emphasises the continuous reliance on them for our well-being'.
