Abstract: This brief study explores selected gender and development issues in the Maltese Public Service as follows. It analyses to what extent, and how conditions in the service are changing for women as well as men. This is be done in a way that will reach educators, academics, students, researchers, planners and policy makers, including all those interested in gender and development of officers in the public service. It highlights the importance of knowledge among policy makers regarding gender specific issues. This was in order that policies may be directed at the needs and aspirations of civil servants within the Maltese Public Service, which reflects broader needs and aspirations within the community. Finally, the study highlights gaps in gender policy. This includes incentives that accord due recognition for the work of officials in the service. Research was based on books, articles, reviews and other documents - including official circulars - on the position of women and men in the service, along with a gender assessment and analysis of the development of the Maltese Public Service.
