Since early ages, plants have been utilised in several different ways by the human being. The word "plants" include; flowering plants, weed plants, poisonous plants, trees, shrubs etc. Plants are important to humans and animals in many different ways. Plants are used for food, medicine, ornamentals etc. Sometimes only few parts from the trees are used, or even extracts are done to obtain the needed material or substances. This thesis that I have been working on, contains several information on five trees and shrubs, which can be found on the Maltese Island. These are the Carob Tree, Bay laurel, Upright false pepper, Lentisk and the Oleander. Extraction of metabolites was also done from these plants. The first five chapters of the thesis include some general information and description of the trees, such as the scientific classification, origin, characteristics etc. One can find also the chemical constituents that are found in these trees, and also some uses. Pictures of the trees, leafs, seeds etc are include as well. The sixth chapter is the laboratory work. This chapter includes the apparatus, material used, the procedures of the practical work etc. The material that was used was collected from different areas of the Maltese Island, and the laboratory work was done at the Soil Laboratory, Għammieri Experimental Farm. The subsequent chapters include the results of the laboratory work and a discussion. At the end a list of references is attached.en_GB
