dc.description.abstract | Stress is a physical or psychological stimulus that can produce mental tension or physiological reactions that may lead to illness. There exists a relation between stress levels and the quantity and quality of work performed. The caring professionals tend to suffer from considerable stress due to their intense relations with humans. Elderly homes are becoming increasingly popular in Malta due to the country's aging population. The aim of this study was to determine, the level of occupational stress and the major stressors among the staff working in six of the elderly homes in Malta. This study examined both the causes of stress, including work and personal aspects and also the physical and psychological effects of stress. The instrument used was a specially designed questionnaire divided into three sections. The data was analysed through a quantitative approach and percentages were derived. Results indicate that the most disturbing stressor is work overload. The most annoying distressing symptoms that were reported were due to backaches and stiff neck. Working harder more than others and working with people were the most visible psychological effects of high levels of stress. Female caregivers indicated a higher level of job satisfaction than male counterparts. Further studies should be conducted to corroborate the results of this study and to investigate other aspects of occupational stress among staff in Elderly homes. | en_GB |
