Abstract: The Senglea Family Literacy Programme, implemented between May and July 2000, offered literacy teaching for children while improving the parents' ability to help their children with literacy. The programme aimed to foster positive attitudes towards literacy and to build on and extend existing family literacy practices in the home. Findings indicated that the programme was successful in challenging and changing the participants' negative attitudes towards literacy. The parents became more aware of their role in their children's literacy development and learned how to assist them with reading. The children gained confidence in their reading abilities, read more and came to perceive reading as a pleasurable activity.
