Celebrating the 70th Birthday of Mgr Dr Anthony Abela

Abstract

l am delighted that the Department of Sacred Scripture, Hebrew and Greek, within the Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta, has taken the initiative to compile a comprehensive listing of publications of our esteemed friend and colleague, Mgr Dr Anthony Abela, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. This bibliography, covering one hundred- and-twenty scholarly entries that include inter alia eleven books, eighty-seven academic articles and twenty book reviews, is a tribute to the intellectual output of Dun Anton, as we affably know him, in the area of biblical studies. This impressive list of publications cannot, however, adequately communicate the breadth and impact of the extensive research and academic achievement of this dedicated, meticulous, beloved and humble scholar. The academic vocation of Fr Abela spans a period of twenty-seven years (1982-2009) characterized by constant generosity and concern towards students and colleagues, outstanding dedication to research, steadfast commitment as head of department and as editor of the Faculty's academic journal Melita Theologica, as well as unfailing service to the University of Malta, the local Church and society in general. The refined qualities of his mind and character have earned him considerable respect and well-deserved esteem from students and colleagues at the University of Malta and abroad. [Excerpt]
