Perceptions of gender preference of the newborn in Malta

Abstract

A study was carried out to examine the perceptions regarding gender preference of the Maltese newborn child. A questionnaire was distributed amongst persons of different age groups. No preference was expressed by 42% of the respondents especially by the highly educated and active in high and low grade professions. However, results of this study confirm that gender preferences do exist amongst members of the Maltese society. Age and civil status emerged as two significant variables that can affect one's preference for the newborn. Stereotype beliefs about defined roles still dominate the social concept. Men are expected to be the breadwinners whilst women are responsible for family care. The boy preference is more evident in the younger females and older males for career prospects. The girl preference tends to prevail in both male and female older generation and is perceived as an 'insurance' for old age!
