Abstract: This long essay will focus on the position of female workers under the new Employment and Industrial Relations Act of 2002. An analysis will be made on the effects of the provisions laid down in the new legislation on female workers with a different civil status. The First Chapter deals with the introductory part, which includes the aim of the long essay, the sources, consulted and the methodology applied. Next, Chapter Two, will be divided into five parts. Part One will include a historical overview of the relevant legislation, repealed and in force. Part Two, Three and Four will survey the provisions in the current enactments and treat the system as it emanates from them. Indication will be given on the extent of enforceability of the enactments in vigore. Part Five will refer to the effects and utility of the relevant enactments in force in the Maltese society. Statistics issued by National Statistics Office (NSO) and by the Statistical Office of the European Communities (EUROSTAT) will be utilized to indicate the extent of the implementation of the relevant enactments. Chapter Three will treat the research used for the questionnaire and for the additional interviews. It will be divided into seven parts: an introduction, sample, objectives, format of questionnaire and interviews, and data collection analysis as well as any limitations of the study and findings of both the questionnaire and the interviews. The following Chapter, the Forth one, will be a short conclusion together with personal recommendations.
