The main objective of this study was to identify the occupational hazards associated with the work of post persons on the beat, and to find practical solutions to minimize the existing risks. Despite the widely held belief that post persons have an easy job which is not detrimental to their health, the study has revealed that these workers are exposed to various hazards in the normal course of their job, related to the processing and delivering of mail. From their replies to the questionnaire, the study participants have shown an awareness of the various hazards surrounding them. 78% identified hazard associated to work station design, while as much as 87% felt that fuel exhaust encountered during mail delivery was harmful to their health, pointing out to the growing hazard of pollution of the environment. Frequent bending of torso was clamed by 94% of respondents, while frequent stretching of upper limbs was a factor indicated by 90% of respondents. Long beat duration excessive burden and uneven roads, were all considered to create a considerable hazard by post persons, resulting in unwanted accidents, and ultimately various forms of musculoskeletal disorders. Similarly exposure to solar rays created a hazard of various degrees of skin irritation and eye problems. One should not under estimate the gender related differences with regards to the hazards encountered. Female post persons appear to be more susceptible to hazards when compared with their male counterparts. Risk Assessment is an important element to safeguard the health and safety of the post person. Other Important factors include regular maintenance of equipment, proper clothing and insurance policies.en_GB
