The Institute of Maltese Studies aims to serve as a focal point for scholars by organising seminars and encounters within comparative contexts. The Institute aims to serve as a research resource centre and plans to serve as an ethnic-cultural link with Maltese and other overseas communities through the promotion of association, research, information and exchange agreements with tertiary institutions and communal bodies.
In line with this objective, the Institute has an ongoing taught Master in Maltese Studies which has been offered incessantly, on alternate years, since 2008. The units offered as part of this taught course comprise a wide variety of topics which are meant to serve as a basis for a proper understanding of Maltese culture and perception.
Throughout the years the taught section of the course has served as a means to internalise an awareness of Maltese culture while the thesis has allowed students to specialise on a specific aspect of their choice often in areas that are discussed in the taught part of the course. Over the years the writing of the theses is solidly contributing to create a new home-grown, interdisciplinary source and resource.
In essence the Master's degree offered at the Institute of Maltese Studies addresses the particularities and diversities of Maltese culture, essential elements in the sweeping uniformity that is being generated by globalisation.
