Event: ŻfinMalta’s Creative Movement: Dance classes for young children and adolescents
Date: 24 June - 2 July 2023
Time: Various
Venue: ZfinMalta Studios, Valletta
ŻfinMalta are looking to move and shake the islands from within our studios with a series of creative movement sessions for children and young people between 7 – 18 years old.
This creative movement intensive invites children and young people to join expert somatic leaders Julienne Schembri, Sarah Vella and Rachel Calleja, over 4 days, without the need for previous dance experience!
Participants will not be required to have a dance background and are encouraged to show up and get creative with their most familiar tool, their body! The intensive occurs over 4 sessions, with a total of 6 hours training for each age group, between Saturday 24 June – Sunday 2 July 2023 at ŻfinMalta’s studios.
The group of 7 – 11 year olds will have sessions between Thursday 29 June – Sunday 2 July 2023, under the guidance of Julienne Schembri. The theme for the intensive is ‘Journeys’ and we will take inspiration from the journeys that happen in Nature; animals on land, sea and air, to inspire novel expressions.
“We will explore movement pathways, directions and Dynamics that influence the pace, flow and quality of how we transition. We will create Maps, based on the journeys as means to create original dance scores which will allow participants to weave concepts together into a living expression of their learning.”
The group of 12 – 14 year olds will have sessions on 24 & 25 June, 1 & 2 July 2023, under the guidance of Sarah Vella. The emphasis of these sessions would be on encouraging participants to listen to their bodies, explore their own movement potential, and express themselves creatively through movement. Most of all, we will have fun, fun and some more fun!
The 15 – 18 years old group will have sessions on 24 & 25 June, 1 & 2 July 2023, under the guidance of Rachel Calleja. “We will exchange favourite pieces of music and find how they encourage us to move in different ways, playing with rhythm, dynamic, timing and styles.” says Rachel.
On Sunday 2 July 2023, we invite family and peers to attend a small sharing/presentation of the movement explored during the intensive during the last half hour of each session.
