It is commonplace that there are quite a number of passages in the Bible which make us feel extremely uneasy, especially when it comes to praying with such texts that at first sight seem to be endorsing genocide (such as the command to exterminate the Canaanites whom the Israelites encountered on entering The Promised Land), and vengeance.
We can understand what this is all about if we remember that the Bible is made up of huge chunks of narratives that function as models of what we ought to do alongside what we should not do.
Christ as the principle of interpretation of the biblical texts shows us the way forward.
