The Department of Youth & Community Studies will be hosting a public lecture entitled
Challenging Youth: Who’s Challenging Who?

The objective of this public lecture is not to simply indulge in deconstructive semantics, but to examine professional ambitions for others (non-professionals) and begin to identify a more collaborative, participatory and inclusive approach to those who work with, for and amongst young people.
This lecture will be looking to develop a practical paradigm of practice that explores the potential of the ‘constructive self’, and its significance to youth workers. The consequent approach to practice is evolutionary in character; it is more about regarding, adapting or redefining the self than a blunt objective to change (transform) others. This way of conceiving of our work is more humane than the effort to transform (change or alter) others which, as a non-acceptance of self, can be experienced as a violent (violating) incursion.

About the Guest Speaker:
Dr Brian Belton is a senior tutor at the YMCA George Williams College, London. Currently he is involved in a growing, worldwide network of practitioners and academics concerned with the exploration of youth work.
Brian is an internationally renowned educator and trainer and has written widely on youth work and related subjects.
