The Rectorate in collaboration with the Faculty for Social Wellbeing together with Dr Carmen Sammut, the Pro-Rector for Student and Staff Affairs and Outreach are organising a conference called: ‘Towards a truly accessible University’ on 25 November 2016 at the University of Malta Valletta Campus starting at 09:00hrs.
The conference will open with an address by HE the President of Malta Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and will be attended and addressed by the Rector, Professor Alfred Vella.
Students with learning difficulties, namely persons on the autistic spectrum and dyslexia have ample support during their primary and secondary education but they seem to face difficulties at tertiary level.
The time is ripe for the University to evaluate its current position when it comes to access arrangements for these students.
The objective of this Conference is to identify ways how we can overcome existing barriers that are encountered by students on the autism spectrum and other learning difficulties. This Conference will bring together relevant stakeholders: students; academics and experts; parents' organizations and policy makers.
The conference will include a number of international speakers and will attempt at defining needs and solutions to the new challenges the University is facing in this area.
It would indeed be a privilege if you could attend this conference and invite any of your academic colleagues and students to come and contribute to this important debate.
It would be appreciated if you would inform Ms Lara Ellul on how many people will be attending.
