After New York, ‘Italy on Screen Today’ comes to Malta to continue celebrating the Italian cinema with such special guests as actors Toby Jones and Marco Giallini, and film director Paolo Genovese.
From 2 to 4 December, 2016 Malta will host Italy on Screen Today – Malta with a retrospective of Italian films to be screened at Valletta’s Embassy Cinema. The festival guests include actor Marco Giallini and film director Paolo Genovese who will present the movie ‘Perfetti Sconosciuti’, and British performer Toby Jones in attendance who will launch ‘Tale of Tales’ – ‘Il Racconto dei Racconti’
‘Italy on Screen Today’ – Malta—after the success achieved in the New York edition held from 26-30 October, 2016, where a number of film luminaries made an appearance including well-known Italian actress Paola Cortellesi—is created and directed by Loredana Commonara and coordinated by Stella Scarafoni. The festival aims at launching the art and culture of cinema and at promoting Italian cinema abroad. The Malta retrospective is conceived as a showcase of some of the most significant contemporary Italian films, including short movies, and Q & A sessions with the filmmakers and lead performers.
On Friday 2 December, at 16:30, six screenings will be held, including short- and full-length movies from Progetto MigrArti, promoted by Mibact: Haider Rashid’s ‘No Borders’; Simone Massi’s animated short ‘Vittorio de Seta, Maestro di Cinema’; Fabio Cavalli’s ‘Naufragio con Spettatore’; Alessandro Valenti’s ‘Babbo Natale’; Luca Lepore’s ‘Amira’; and Massimiliano Zanni’s ‘Latif Poeta e Combattente’.
The festival, will be introduced by a speech at 18:30 by Salvatore Schirmo, Director of Valletta’s Italian Institute of Culture, and will be moderated by Professor Gloria Lauri-Lucente Head of the Department of Italian and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
Giallini and Genovese will be presented with the Premio Vento d’Europa – Wind of Europe International Award, a prize conceived by Loredana Commonara, Artistic Director of the Ventotene Film Festival, for the purpose of acknowledging artists who have become symbols of European culture. The award was established in 2013 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the European Federalist Movement Created by Altiero Spinelli—one of the founding fathers of United Europe—during his confinement on the island of Ventotene.
On Saturday 3 December, at 16:30, Francesco Munzi’s, ‘Assalto al Cielo’ narrates the youth protests that shook Italy between 1967 and 1977, in a movie exclusively created through archive material and footage.
At 18:00, Matteo Garrone’s ‘Tale of Tales’ will be screened. A Q&A session English actor Toby Jones will follow, moderated by Professor Gloria Lauri-Lucente. Jones will be presented with the Premio d’Europa – Wind of Europe International Award.
Sunday 4 December, at 16:30, the festival schedule includes ‘9x10 Novanta’, a film comprised of different episodes directed by nine promising directors of the new Italian cinematic landscape.
At 18:30, Regina and Christopher Catrambone, founders of MOAS Association (the most important rescue mission sponsored by private citizens) will introduce the screening of Gianfranco Rosi’s ‘Fuocoammare’.
‘The festival’, explains the Artistic Director, ‘ aims at exploring the logistic and productive role played by Malta in the world of cinema, and delves into the historical and cultural issues brought to the fore by Italian film productions and which can be especially appreciated in Malta – the heart of the Mediterranean.’
‘Italy on Screen Today – Malta’ has been made possible with the contribution of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, and is sponsored by SIAE, with the High Patronage of the European Parliament, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of the University of Malta, La Valletta’s Italian Institute of Culture, Rai Cinema, 01 Distribution, Progetto MigrArti, Istituto Luce and the Italian Radio-Television Community.
