The Department of Industrial Engineering (DIME) at the University of Malta, in collaboration with the Malta Branch of the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) UK, is organising a lecture on 'Design of Assistive Technology Devices - A German Perspective' .
The event will take place on Wednesday 29 November at 12:30 in the CAD/CAM Systems Lab, at the University of Malta Msida Campus.
Germany is well known to produce high quality products, mainly in the mechanical engineering and in the automotive sectors. Nevertheless, there are a number of successful products in other areas, such as assistive technology (AT), which are being developed in Germany, as a result of collaboration between academia and industry. An AT product/service is aimed at helping people with a particular health condition(s) to live independently and hence supporting them in their daily activities. Examples of AT products include hearing aids and wheel chairs.
The lecture, which will be delivered by Prof. Peter Leibl, will give an overview of typical applied research projects related to assistive technology, being conducted between the Munich University of Applied Sciences (HM) and industry. A number of case-studies will be used to explain the German approach of getting an innovative AT device closer to market.
