Abstract
Seventy-five years on from Beveridge report and the founding of social safety nets across advanced economies, how fit for purpose are current welfare states? Looking ahead, we face a choice, as Richard Titmuss phrased so well back then, to ‘live out the destinies of tradition’ or to reconsider what welfare could, indeed perhaps should be. This lecture will explore new paradigms, including universal basic income, and considers current concerns such as rising inequalities.
