The current trends against previously established moral and Christian values are shaking and shaping a Christian identity formerly held to be unquestionably true. The study of Jesus’ meeting with the Samaritan woman (Jn 4:1-42) provides a context whereby Samaritan and Jew meet at the well of their common ancestor. In the presence of Jesus Christ, this encounter is transformed into one which gives everlasting life. Past experiences and contrasting religious practices are reconciled during the dialogue with Christ. Through the study of this text we will discover aspects in this encounter which can shed light on what remains relevant in the formation of the identity of the Christian disciple in relation to his past.

Cynthia Grech Sammut is a Medical Doctor specialised in the field of family medicine. Her interest in a holistic approach to health and work with complementary therapies led her to further her studies in Spirituality. She earned an MA in Spirituality (General) in 2017 with research on 'Discovering Christian Identity and Memory through the Meeting of Jesus with the Samaritan Woman (Jn 4:1-42)'.
