Abstract
The project aimed at shedding light on the use of Learner Centred Education (LCE) as a tool for social change in adult education (AE) programmes for migrants in four European countries: Cyprus, Scotland, Malta and Estonia, through the experiences and perceptions of adult learners and educators as they embark on these programmes. It aspired to present an illuminative view of the ‘fine-grained’ processes at work during the delivery of these programmes by focusing on a much neglected part of the educational terrain, the practice of teaching and learning, and on how such practice relates to the context of culture, structure and policy in which it is embedded. The final purpose, in an applied sense, was to inform the design, implementation and further development of AE programmes that promote social change, transformation and empowerment for marginalised adults, at a time when governments in Cyprus and other European countries, following the European Union policy agenda, are seeking to harness the potential of migrants and take action to overcome illiteracy, unemployment, rural isolation and reduced opportunities.
