On Wednesday 7 December, the UNESCO Chair in Global Adult Education, Faculty of Education at the University of Malta (UM), is organising its third online Global Birth Centenary Fest.
Following similar fests in honour of Paulo Freire and Raymond Williams last December, it is now the turn of former Tanzanian President, Julius Kambarage Nyerere, venerated in his country as 'Mwalimu'. He made a tremendous contribution to African Education, and specifically Adult literacy and Popular Adult Education. The event Julius K. Nyerere (1922-2022) Global Online Birth Centenary Fest will be held online via Zoom. Access the Zoom link.
The programme features a stellar line up of people from East Africa and other parts of the world, some of whom worked in Tanzanian adult education during his presidency. As with Freire and Williams last year, a global figure in adult education and beyond is being celebrated in a global manner across different time zones. Speakers are from Tanzania, Kenya, Canada, the USA and Germany. There is a strong African presence, both educators in Africa and educators among the African diaspora.
These activities are in keeping with the UNESCO Chair's focus on Global Adult Education. This event coincides with the open access publication of the latest issue of the global flagship Adult Education Journal, Convergence, an International Adult Education Journal, at Vol. 43 (2), also under the aegis of the UNESCO Chair as is the call for papers for an international conference in May on International Critical Adult Education and Learning, convened with the Department of Arts, Open Communities & Adult Education.
