Time: 12:00

The time has arrived yet again to enjoy a number of cultural tours organised specifically for all UM and JC staff and students as part of the Christmas on Campus events programme. The following visits are available for the price of EUR5 per visit, which includes transport from Msida campus to the venue, entrance and the tour guide. All proceeds are in aid of l-Istrina and id-Dar tal-Providenza.
This year's Cultural Tours will be taking place on:
- [FULLY BOOKED] 1 December at 12:00 - Underground Valletta (Heritage Malta)
Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the underground passages beneath the city of Valletta. Tunnels were dug for various reasons, including movement of troops, grain storage, water and drainage. These existing tunnels were later on expanded to serve as shelters during wartime. Visitors are being asked to wear closed comfortable shoes for the visit (high heels, sandals or flip flops are not allowed). Tickets for this tour are very limited.
- 1 December at 12:00 - The Malta Railway Museum, Birkirkara
The group will have the opportunity to visit the Railway Museum situated in the Railway Gardens in Birkirkara, set up by the Birkirkara Local Council and The Malta Railway Foundation within the building of the original train station. Apart from viewing numerous train models and other related exhibits, participants may also enter inside the original train cabin which has recently been expertly restored.
- 4 December at 12:00 - Inquisitors Palace, Vittoriosa
Heritage Malta holds a unique collection of textiles rarely made available for the general public to experience. The visit will focus on the recently opened temporary exhibition entitled The Maltese Bride: 19th - 20th-century bridal wear in Malta. The displays do not simply tackle fabrics and sewing techniques. Each wedding gown on display narrates a story about the person who wore it, making the exhibition a truly memorable experience. Under the guidance of Heritage Malta's Textiles Senior Curator, this will be an opportunity to delve into aspects of the unique tangible history of Malta's best textile collection.
- 5 December at 12:00 - National Library, Valletta
Located at the heart of Valletta, the National Library (also known as the Bibliotheca) was constructed by the Knights of St John to house the Order's book collection and its important documents. Nowadays it contains not only the archives of the Order, but also those of the Università of Mdina and the Università of Valletta, along with the largest Melitensia collection on the Island, aside from the UM library. The group will enjoy an in-house tour of the building to learn more about its history and collections.
- These visits are open to all students and members of staff at the University of Malta.
- All tours will commence at 12:00 (noon). Meeting place will be at the University main entrance (Mater Dei side). Please ensure you have your ticket.
