Title
Expert language and linguistic practices in Science and Engineering as learning barriers: an opportunity for educational enhancement
Abstract
Expert language and expert linguistic practices represent barriers for deep learning. Since the majority of subject experts, particularly in Science and Engineering, are not language/linguistics experts, expert language becomes a blind spot in designing learning activities. Alternatively, when language is explored in Higher Education, it is usually restricted to skills learning activities, instead of given central positioning in learning. This guest lecture will discuss these issues, and provide concrete examples of how expert language aware-learning design can enhance deep learning in Science and Engineering.
