Throughout October, people worldwide show support for those affected by breast cancer. At UM, we too want to add shades of pink to our campus and raise awareness.
This year, we are encouraging you to donate for a cause that is close to our hearts, and to our second home.
Local NGO, Smiling with Jerome, was set up after Jerome Frendo, a former UM student, was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, and sadly passed away in 2017.
Despite his health challenges, Jerome remained focused on helping others, and his family continues this legacy. One of their initiatives is distributing ‘Chemo Bags of Hope’ to cancer patients at SAMOC, including those with breast cancer.
These bags are filled with items to help patients get through the long hours of treatment, such as:
- Lap Blankets
- Hand Sanitisers
- Tissues
- Alcohol-Free Mouthwash
- Lip Balm
- Water Bottle
- Art Therapy Book (for adults)
- Colouring Books (for children)
- Puzzle Books
- Stationery (Pens/pencils/erasers/ sharpeners)
- Notebooks
- Sensory Toys (Stress Balls, Poppits, etc)
Here’s where you come into the equation.
-1-
A big box will be placed at the Library Foyer from Monday 21 until Wednesday 30 October, which will welcome material donations (only items that are new) that will be then presented to Josette, Jerome’s mother, at the end of the month.
-2-
On Wednesday, 30 October, come to work wearing a splash of pink, and either individually, or in a group (the latter is highly encouraged!), leading up to the day, you can either donate money online or some of the supplies by placing them in the box mentioned above.
[Don't forget to tag UM in your group photos on social media so we can feature them as stories!]

Pink October Events:
- The Faculty of Science is organising a bake sale on 22 October between 08:30 and 12:00 (noon). Bring your appetite!
- In addition to this, and also on Wednesday 30 October, a bake sale coordinated by KSU is being held at Quadrangle, another opportunity for you and your friends to buy some yummy treats (with the proceeds going entirely towards Smiling with Jerome).
Join us in making a difference—wear it pink for a great cause.
