The Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development is pleased to host Dr Francesco Bruzzone who will be delivering a public lecture entitled Trick or Threat: Commuter Satisfaction & Private Car Loyalty in Central Europe. Many of us commute by car, sometimes even to school or university. This depends on several factors, including the availability of alternatives, perceived comfort, etc., and results in commuting systems that are strongly car-centric, even in Europe. Several studies discuss the determinants of mode choice, focusing on which individual, cultural, cognitive, and socioeconomic factors influence people's choice to drive, ride, or walk to school and work. However, understanding whether people are satisfied with their mode choice, and how and to what extent they are loyal to it, is another matter. This talk will present two recent articles that explore commuter satisfaction and loyalty, based on a comprehensive survey of mobility habits and socio-economic conditions conducted as part of Smart-Commuting, an EU-funded Interreg project. A methodology that goes beyond mode choice analysis is presented to provide information on what keeps us in the driver's seat, focusing on the habits of inveterate drivers. Ultimately, the research that will be presented gives some precious insights for transportation decision-makers and for funding and planning priorities to foster sustainable commuting choices.
