Event: Anthropology Book Launch: Unexpected Encounters: Migrants and Tourists in the Mediterranean
Date: Tuesday 19 November 2024
Time: 17:00 - 18:30
Venue: Faculty of Arts Library, Old Humanities Building
Dr Vietti's book;' Unexpected Encounters: Migrants and Tourists in the Mediterranean,' explores the intersections between migration and tourism in the Mediterranean, and is the result of extensive ethnographic research carried out over a decade in the Mediterranean regions.
It focuses on three interrelated themes:
- The experiences of homecoming migrants who visit their country of origin for holidays;
- The inequalities surrounding the encounters between local people, tourists and migrants in borderlands; and
- How migration and tourism affect cultural heritage in European cities.
The book shows how interconnected mobilities play a crucial role in boosting the global dynamics of cultural, social, economic, and political transformation in the Mediterranean.
Following the presentation of the book, two discussants from the Department, Dr Maurice Said and Prof. Daniela DeBono, will start off the discussion about this important work. A mingle will follow.
Dr Vietti is an Assistant Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Turin, Italy. He has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Mediterranean.
