Event: Tertiary Teaching and Learning: The Challenges and Opportunities of GenAI
Date: 11 February 2025
Time: 14:00
Venue: Msida Campus: Campus Hub - CHBO-213
The use of GenAI has brought about new realities in universities. To maximise student learning, lecturers need to adapt their teaching and assessment method. This is essential if universities are to strengthen their role as places for learning.
There is a lot of hype about how GenAI is changing work practices in all sectors. It is claimed that companies seek recruits who are proficient in the use of this new technology. Others point out that GenAI is of marginal use in the professions and at senior management levels. Important decisions are based on reliable information and it is humans who are able to determine the reliability or otherwise of information.
The Department of Tourism Management, Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy (FEMA) is organising a debate on the implications of GenAI for tertiary education. The subject will be debated by a panel of academics and professionals followed by a discussion from the floor.
The panel will include two professors from other universities namely Prof. Lidija Petrić, University of Split and Prof. Albina Pashkevich, Nord University.
University of Split (Croatia) and Nord University (Norway) are part of the SEA-EU Alliance, as is the University of Malta. This gives UM academics the opportunity to be informed about how European universities are reacting to these new realities.
The event is intended for academics with a teaching role. Admission is free and no prior registration is required. For more information, please send an email to Dr John Ebejer.
There will be light refreshments after the event.
