Abstract:
Steps, words, gestures, bodies have all coordinates and flows. The artist's talk will focus on a selected array of artworks and concepts of Bill Psarras, mainly associated with methodological processes of walking, drifting and transmitting across urban and sea contexts. It aims to present a series of critical reflections on Geopoetic, performative and technological aspects of body, poetry and place, towards expanded performative gestures the intersections of performance art, media arts and poetry.
Bill Psarras (1985) is an artist and academic, exploring poetics across different media. He is an Assistant Prof. at the Department of Performing and Digital Arts, University of the Peloponnese (Greece).
His art merges the poetic and the technological, often through site/walking performances, video/digital art and media installations; having city, poetry, flânerie, place and sea as motifs.
He received the ARTWORKS SNF Artist Fellowship Award (2021). His artworks have been exhibited in international festivals, group exhibitions across Europe, United States (i.e. Onassis Foundation, MOMus, Thessaloniki Concert Hall, FILE , Athens Digital Arts Festival, VIDEOFORMES International Festival, WPA Media, Film and Video Poetry Society, ROOMS2013, OutTopias Benaki Museum, Nice!, Video Art Miden, Matera Festival, CICA Museum of Art, FONLAD, Cadence Video Poetry, International Forum of Performance Art 2023, Bari International Art Expo Festival 2014, Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2010).
His research has been published across academic journals (LEA MIT Press, Technoetic Arts, International Journal of Arts and Technology), conferences (ISEA, TTT, Hybrid City) and books (Palgrave Macmillan, University Studio Press, Tziola Publications, NDC) at the intersections of performance art, geohumanities and digital arts.
His artworks/research have been funded by AHRC, Hellenic State Scholarships, NEON, Onassis, MOMus and Stavros Niarchos Foundation. He has a Ph.D in Arts and Computational Technology (Goldsmiths), an MA in Digital Arts (University of the Arts London) and BA (Ionian University) in expanded media arts. Bill is also a musician across rock and ambient genres, and has also published two poetry collections (Tundra, 2017 – Pigi Publications and Urbanaut, 2023 – Iolcos Publishing).
