Archaeology in a Maltese island state: appropriations, conflict, challenges and opportunities
18 - 22 May 2020
Study-trip organised by the Conferences and Events Unit of the University of Malta
The 5-day programme aims to highlight the main issues characterizing Maltese archaeology including political undertones and conflict arising from the appropriation and management of archaeological heritage. Lectures by local high profile academics will offer a deeper insight into the complexities of the sites and visits led by curators will present the challenges faced and mitigation strategies developed vis-Ã -vis the presentation of local archaeological material.
Including visits of sites in different parts of the Maltese Islands and from different prehistorical and historical periods will ensure a more holistic understanding of the mechanics and concept that are at play in the archaeological sphere in Malta. The group will be accompanied by a licensed tourist guide, with contributions site curators and local established archaeologists such as Prof. Nicholas C. Vella, Dr Reuben Grima and Prof. Timmy Gambin.
