World Food Day takes place annually on 16 October. It promotes awareness of hunger and action for the future of food, people and the planet. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) designated 16 October as World Food Day in 1979.
World Food Day supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: SDG 2: Zero Hunger – Ending hunger, achieving food security, and promoting sustainable agriculture and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – Ensuring sustainable food production systems and reducing food waste.
The theme for World Food Day 2024 is "Right to foods for a better life and a better future". This requires global action to ensure all people have access to enough diverse, nutritious and safe food, leaving no one behind. Food is the third most basic human need after air and water. There is more than enough food produced in the world to feed everyone on the planet. Yet 733 million people still go hungry.
