The Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, represented by Professor Maria Attard, recently presented work related to a Traffic Management and Urban Design Strategy for Lija to residents. This work has been possible with the support and collaboration of Architecture Project (AP), Perit Jacques Borg Barthet and Perit Alberto Miceli Farrugia, and the Local Council of Lija.
The strategy is the first ever document to incorporate sustainable mobility and healthier urban environment principles in the re-definition of a locality's urban area. The document is set to be an example of best practice for other localities in the islands and hopes to raise awareness of the need for better urban environments that support communities and sustainable mobility.
Architecture Project (AP) accepted to support the development of this strategy which was also made possible with contributions from various researchers within the Institute including Deborah Mifsud, Nicolette Formosa, Carlos Canas Sanz and Iago Gomez.
This work—which started as a research project and is now a tangible contribution to society and the locality of Lija—is another attempt by the Institute to raise awareness of sustainable development, but more important, to help implement projects which impact people's quality of life and improve urban areas to support sustainable mobility and healthier urban environments.
