The Dean of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing, Dr Andrew Azzopardi, has participated in the design of the document on the children’s participation in political campaigns.
Together with the Commissioner for Children, who led this initiative, a number of entities were involved in the technical committee, namely, the Faculty for Social Wellbeing, PL, PN, AD, Agenzija Appogg, the Broadcasting Authority, the Commission for the Rights of Persons with a Disability, the Malta Audio Visual Association, the Public Broadcasting Service, the Office of the Information and the Data Protection Commissioner.
The Dean of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing reiterates his concern that such standards need to be introduced at the earliest to safeguard the interests of minors.
This Standard is aimed to guide the commissioning entities during the planning and production of political communication and advertising efforts such as electoral campaigns, referenda and other related activities which involve the participation of minors. These guidelines are intended to ensure the protection of minors during all stages of these productions in support of the Maltese legal framework. Commissioning entities providing productions which are in line with these guidelines and related national legislation may declare self-compliance with the guidelines of this standard. Self-compliance is a sign of good practice that impinges positively on the campaign.
