The Institute for European Studies and the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Arts, organise monthly research seminars that focus on key issues in European and international politics. The aim of these research seminars is twofold: to present state of the art research developed by resident and visiting members of the University of Malta, and to identify gaps where further research is needed to support policy.
The research seminar on 24 November was delivered by Dr Taruna Shalini Ramessur, an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics and Statistics, University of Mauritius. Prof. Ramessur presented a paper that discussed the contexts and conditions under which gender inequality can shape export competitiveness. Prof. Ramessur also examined the key channels through which trade influences the well-being and empowerment of women, discussing how to possibly mainstream gender into trade policy and translate gender equality commitments made at the international level into national laws.
Dr Susanna Thede, senior lecturer at the Institute for European Studies with a background in international economics and trade, acted as the main discussant by giving precise feedback and starting off the discussion among all participants.
A number research seminars will held in the following months: tourism and soft power (Mr Kersten Calleja, 12 December); the conceptualizations of power in humanitarian action (Dr Sulagna Maitra and Dr Anna Khakee, 14 December); migration politics and the EU (Ms Nadia Petroni 10 January); visual narrative of the European Parliament advertising poster campaigns in European elections (Ms Fabrizio Ellul, 23 January); national fiscal rules and fiscal institutions in the context of the EU's Stability and Growth Pact (Ms Moira Catania, 14 March); climate impacts and development challenges in vulnerable coastal communities of small island developing states (Dr Stefano Moncada, 18 April).
