The Master of Arts in Translation, Terminology and Interpreting Studies was launched in 2003 before Malta’s accession to the European Union with the aim to provide Maltese translators and interpreters for all European Institutions.
As from October 2018, the Department will be reforming its courses in such a way as to be present not only in European markets but in the non-European ones too.
Students who would like to pursue careers as translators, terminologists and interpreters in various fields and industries including EU Institutions, the media, TV and film industry, the literary and publishing industry and any sectors which require technical, legal, financial or scientific translation can join these courses.
The course aims at offering a theoretical and practical background, based on the demands of the current global translation market. Courses dealing with interpretation will include court interpreting and community interpreting besides conference interpreting.
The Department also envisages to introduce a warrant system that enables local translators and interpreters to exercise their profession in a regularised market; this way forward is to be set in place with the collaboration of government authorities. Language combinations will encompass English, Maltese, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Chinese.
