The Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Educational Research organised a Summer School for students enrolled in its EU-funded international Masters in Education Policies for Global Development (GLOBED). The third run of the Masters, which is offered by the University of Malta in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Oslo, and the University of Amsterdam, attracted over 525 applicants from around the world.
Twenty-six students were chosen for the course, which commenced in September 2017, with one third benefiting from an ERASMUS+ scholarship. The current cohort, with students hailing from 22 different countries, participated in a Summer School held at Manresa House in Gozo between the 10 and 15 June 2018.
The theme of the Summer School was 'Problematising research in/for the Global South: The power/knowledge nexus'. Speakers included professors Arathi Sriprakash (University of Cambridge), Aziz Choudry (McGill University), and Catherine Odora Hoppers (University of South Africa), besides faculty from the MA consortium.
Local contributors included professors Peter Mayo and Simone Galea, and Dr Censu Caruana. The Summer School also prepared students to mobilise research tools that enhance transformative practice in the contexts they will be employed in.
Students graduating from this programme aspire to work with international aid agencies, such as UNICEF and Save the Children.
