University of Malta Racing – Malta’s very own Formula Student Team unveiled their race car for the 2018 Formula Student Competition at an event in Villa Bighi on Sunday, 24 June. The competition is to be held in the Silverstone Circuit in the UK this July, bringing together teams from some of the best universities around the world.
The event brought together all the partners, collaborators and team members who contribute to make the project a reality. Present at the event were Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino, Pro-Rector of the University of Malta and Mr Ryan Borg, from the Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations.
This year, the team made a number of improvements to various parts of the car, including a redesigned turbocharger setup, a lighter pedal box and a new electronics system. The most visible improvement is the application of an aerodynamic package which had been in the research phase through engineering final year projects in the past years.
This will be the fifth Maltese entry into a Formula Student event, following successful attempts in 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2017, but this will be the first time that the team attends the UK competition.
UoMR thanks the University of Malta and its Research & Innovation Development Trust (RIDT), and all sponsors and collaborators who helped throughout this project. A big thank you also goes to the team's faculty advisor, Dr. Ing. Maurizio Fenech, who has been a crucial member of the team from the very beginning.
The team’s main sponsors include The Ministry for Education and Employment, Enemed e-power, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, SKF, Silvercraft Products, PwC Malta, Bahco Tools, Attrans International Transport, Empav Engineering, G Molton and Zoqdi Racing Garage.
